, chuck hagel is making the rounds on capitol hill trying to win over support for his nomination as defense secretary. today he met with senator john mccain who has been a vocal critic of the obama administration. late this afternoon mccain said he and hagel had a frank and candid conversation in which they discussed some of mccain's concerns. mccain also called hagel an old friend. it's worth remembering both men are veterans of the vietnam war and that's certainly a band of brothers. we'll be right back. hey, our salads. [ male announcer ] how about v8 v-fusion. a full serving of vegetables, a full serving of fruit. but what you taste is the fruit. so even you... could've had a v8. if we took the already great sentra apart and completely reimagined it with best-in-class combined mpg and more interior room than corolla and civic and a technology suite with bluetooth, navigation, and other handy stuff? yeah, that would be cool. introducing the all-new nissan sentra. it's our most innovative sentra ever. nissan. inn

left undone as that "new york times" article that you just referenced so eloquently put forth the next defense secretary, if senator hagel is, in fact, confirmed, i hope that on day one he will immediately move to insure equal benefits for those serving our country. >> what happens if the supreme court acts against don't ask -- doma, rather, and -- rather, supports doma and if the right to be married is unconstitutional under the law? you helped start the ball rolling with prop eight. you were instigated the hiring of david boys and ted olson to litigate that. this is a real gamble. >> look, we have yet another watershed moment on march 26 and march 27th. the supreme court is going to hear the constitutionality of doma, as well as the perry case, which as you know is the prop eight case in california, and, look, it's my hope and, again, belief that that court is going to go where it has gone so many times before. like they did in loving v virginia or in brown v. board and erase these skrim other laws from our books, and i'm optimistic. look, the court in loving v. virginia in 1967 was 9-0. i a

it was a defense of entitlements. it wasn't the campaign rhetoric that we need to change our entitlement slightly. it was really telling the activist community i'm your guy now. you don't have to worry about the first few years when we were fighting, and like you can -- let's go for it. >> the first term wasn't exactly a term without policy changes, key changes in american politics. >> paul crudman, who had been very critical of the president on the first day of the new term, wrote a column saying, wait a minute, let's look at the progressive achievements of the first term. i thought that was important. i think your point is really critical. it goes to what michael steel said. the republicans want to cast this as government, anti-government. what obama is saying is that the broad american tradition is a much more moderate tradition where nobody on the progressive side now pretends that government can do everything. no one is talking about nationalizing steel mills or the banks. >> or even health care. >> exactly. >> t

in an 18-minute address, the president laid out a defense of liberalism, a forceful argument for progressive values. just as president reagan made the conservative movement mainstream in the '80s, this president wants to mainstream liberalism, to leave a center-left country as his political legacy. >> we have always understood that when times change, so must we. that fidelity to our founding principles requires new responses to new challenges. that preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action. >> the president took on conservative opponents, making this unmistakable reference to wisconsin congressman and republican vice presidential nominee, paul ryan, who called recipients of federal benefits takers during the 2012 presidential campaign. >> the commitments we make to each other, through medicare and medicaid and social security, these things do not sap our initiative, they strengthen us. they do not make us a nation of takers, they free us to take the risks that make this country great. >> obama became the first president to use the word "gay" in an inaugural add
